Winter Holidays Are Coming — How Will Your Team Celebrate?

The winter holidays are fast approaching, and with them comes an opportunity for organizations to show appreciation, foster connection, and celebrate their teams. But as workplaces become more diverse, the way we celebrate matters more than ever. A thoughtful approach to holiday observances not only boosts morale, it reflects your organization’s values and commitment to inclusion.

Celebrate With Intention

Start by acknowledging that not everyone celebrates the same holidays or celebrates them in the same way. Be intentional about recognizing the variety of cultural and religious observances your team may honor, from Diwali to Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas. Instead of focusing on one tradition, consider a “Season of Celebration” that allows employees to share their own customs and stories. Keep in mind that there are also employees who don’t celebrate any of those holidays or for whom the holidays bring up less than joyful memories. Anyone should be able to opt out without any negative consequences.

Reflect Your Organization’s Values

Celebrations can be a meaningful way to showcase what your organization stands for. If your values include community, consider organizing a volunteer day or donation drive that gives back. If creativity and collaboration are central to your culture, host a team-led event where employees can design decorations or curate a playlist that reflects multiple traditions. The goal is to create a sense of belonging, where everyone sees themselves represented.

Keep Inclusion at the Center

Inclusive celebrations don’t have to be complicated. Partner with your human resources colleagues to align with the company’s benefits and vacation policies. Then, as appropriate, offer flexibility for employees who may need time off for religious observances. Encourage leaders to be aware of cultural sensitivities when planning activities or communications. Even small gestures, like using neutral language in greetings or incorporating a variety of holiday visuals in internal and external materials, can make a big difference.

Practical Ways to Celebrate Thoughtfully
  • Create a digital calendar of holidays and observances to share internally.
  • Feature team stories on social media or internal channels about what the season means to them.
  • Send personalized notes of appreciation instead of generic gifts.
  • Encourage rest and reflection because sometimes, the best gift you can give your team is time.

As you finalize your year-end plans, remember that the most powerful celebrations are those that bring people together authentically. By celebrating inclusively, your organization can honor diverse traditions, strengthen culture, and close out the year in a way that reflects your values.
